| Texas is going Nodal! |
| |
| Noodle? Nope, it’s NODAL (pronounced no-dul)! Nodal is formed from the word “node”. Currently, the Texas electricity grid is divided into four congestion management zones (CMZs) and these zones make up what is called the zonal market. Launching on December 1, 2010, the grid will be comprised of more 4,000 nodes – in other words, we’re all going nodal! |
| Why would they do this, going from 4 congestion zones to over 4,000 nodes? |
| Back in September 2003, the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) asked the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to redesign the wholesale market in order to address the issue of local congestion. It is anticipated that the nodal transition will help the industry in the long run. This includes more efficient dispatch of power plants, price transparency, new power plants, and lower costs to consumers. |
| You can see the difference. *According to ERCOT: |
| Zonal Market – Current |
Nodal Market – Beginning 12/01/10 |
| |
| • Insufficient price transparency |
• Improved price signals |
| • Resources grouped by portfolio |
• Improved dispatch efficiencies |
| • Indirect assignment of local congestion |
• Direct assignment of local congestion |
| *You can find more information on the ERCOT website at http://nodal.ercot.com |
| What does this change mean for Potentia Energy customers? |
| For our customers who are on fixed rate product contracts, your contracts will remain the same with no changes from Potentia Energy. TDSP charges, which are regulated by the PUCT, will still be passed through, all taxes will remain the same, the renewable energy content will not change, and your rights under the PUCT will remain. You’re protected! |
| For customers who are on variable rates, all the PUCT regulations, TDSP charges, taxes, and renewable energy content will still stay the same as well. However, you may be subject to pass through nodal charges. If you are on a variable contract and would like to switch to a fixed contract, please click here or call us at 1.877.NOW.POTENTIA (669.7683) and we can take care of that for you. |
| Where can I find everything I want to know about Nodal? |
| Nodal is led by ERCOT’s Board of Directors and the Special Nodal Program Committee (SNPC). They have everything and more on their website at http://nodal.ercot.com. Knock yourself out! Remember, if you have any questions, you can always contact Potentia Energy too! |
