Residential Power – Tips for Energy Saving

  1. Air dry dishes instead of using your dishwasher's drying cycle. 

  2. Consider buying a laptop for your next computer upgrade; they are more energy efficient than desktops.

  3. Dry towels and heavier cottons in a separate load from lighter-weight clothes. When you run your dryer, run several full loads together. Since it’s already heated, it will consume less energy.

  4. Many electronics continue to draw energy even when they are switched off, including TVs, DVD players, radios and phone/computer chargers. This can be avoided by unplugging the appliance or using a power strip and turning it off to cut power.

  5. Close your curtains and blinds at dusk to stop heat escaping though the windows. Keep them shut in the summertime as well to prevent too much heat from entering your home.

  6. Check your windows to make sure there are no small or large gaps from where your heat or air conditioning could be escaping.

  7. Always turn off lights! It makes a big difference.

  8. Use energy saving light bulbs, they use much less electricity than conventional light bulbs.

  9. Use ceiling fans to cool down your house instead of your air conditioner.

  10. Turn back the thermostat when you are not home.

  11. Replace your air condition filter every month so your unit can run efficiently.

  12. Washing your laundry in cold water rather than warm water to save energy.

  13. Don’t keep your refrigerator or freezer too cold. Make sure your refrigerator door seals are airtight so the cool air doesn’t escape.

  14. Look for the ENERGY STAR® label on new appliances when replacing old appliances.
